How to Protect your Carpets or Floors when Moving?

flooring

Moving can be very stressful and there are a lot of things you need to keep in mind when transporting large items in your home. Believe it or not, floor protection is not given much thought and often overlooked.

Moving furniture, home appliances, and boxes by dragging can cause damage in the form of tears, scratches, and dents to flooring. Damaged floors can cost you hundreds of repairs and reduce the resale amount of the home. Therefore, certain steps need to be taken to protect the carpets and floors when moving.

Considering using the following items:

Cardboard

Cardboard is easy to get your hands on and is proven protective measure for your floors during a move. Put large sheets of thick cardboard in heavy traffic areas. Just use your moving boxes that aren’t in good enough shape to use for packing.

Plywood

Hardwood, tiles, and linoleum are very durable but still prone to dents and scratches. When moving heavy furniture, plywood sheets can be laid on these types of floors, providing more protection than cardboard, paper, and blankets.

Bed sheets, blankets, and rugs

Old blankets, bedding, and rugs can be placed on the floor or wrapped around the edges and feet of tables, chairs, couches and other furniture. In case furniture is dropped on a hard floor, the extra protection will help to prevent dents and scratches.

Carpet masking and film

Masking provides protection from dirt and other damages and can be installed by simply sticking to carpet. The top surface has good friction so that you don’t slip. But they can stain your floor or carpets. Film prevents dirt and soil from getting into the floor.

Shoe booties

Shoe covers should be worn by everyone who helps you to move to avoid dust, dirt and grass stains getting in carpets. Shoe booties are inexpensive and easily slip on and off the mover’s shoe. The only downside is they don’t last long, so purchase an ample amount in advance of your move.

Furniture sliders

One of the best ways to protect hard floors from damage while moving furniture and appliances are furniture sliders. Sliders eliminate or greatly reduce friction between a heavy item and the floor while moving. Simply place a slider under each leg of a piece of furniture and start sliding

Dolly

Large appliances can also be moved using a dolly with inflatable rubber wheels. You can rent a dolly from local moving companies, Home Depot, and other rental operations. Just make the dolly doesn’t have metal wheels, as they are known to scratch floors.

Doormats

When it is raining or snowing outside, use doormats to prevent mud, dirt, soil, and salt from shoes entering your carpets and other flooring. Doormats also prevent dangerous wet spots that can result in movers slipping and dropping heavy items on the floor.

If you’re worried about floor damage, consider calling on the help of a professional moving company near you. Good movers use coverings and limit dragging items to prevent the floor from getting damaged.
