Darwin plan moves into its second stage

The completion of Darwin’s Inner Suburbs Draft Area Plan signals the next step of the city’s revitalisation.

After two months of consultation and studies, the Northern Territory Planning Commission is launching Stage Two of the planning project.

The draft, which is now available for stakeholder discussion, includes proposed future land uses for residential areas, activity centres, industrial and service commercial areas, social infrastructure, movement and transport, essential services, and environment and heritage.

Gary Naim, chairman of the NT Planning Commission, says feedback so far had been encouraging after having discussions with more than 600 residents and receiving almost 70 submissions during Stage One.

“I’ve been delighted by the genuine level of interest from the community, and while there are many different views, I believe we have achieved a good balance between growing the inner suburbs in a vibrant way and protecting the tropical character currently enjoyed in the surrounding localities.”

Naim says growth will likely be concentrated around precincts in the Parap/Woolner and Stuart Highway/Stuart Park areas.

There are two further opportunities to provide feedback – from now until mid-December on the draft Area Plan, and in early 2016 when the revised area plan is exhibited as a proposed Planning Scheme Amendment within the NT Planning Scheme.
